Affaire Libri.

Accompanying a collection of printed pamphlets are manuscripts and facsimiles concerning the "Libri Affair". Guillaume Libri, a political exile from Italy, had established himself as an eminent scholar in France, where he held a chair at the Sorbonne. In the 1840s "it was noticed with alarm that his visits to famous libraries in France tended to coincide with the disappearance of precious books and manuscripts." An official investigation was started and he was formally accused of theft. Libri fled to London and began issuing pamphlets in his defense. Back in Paris, his cause was taken up by the bibliophile Paul Lacroix, Prosper Mérimée the writer, and many others. Letters and documents of Lacroix, Mérimée and the vice-president of the Council of State, Pierre Jules Baroche are included, among other pieces (9 items, 1849-1861).
